Motiva Boosts Port Arthur Output
Motiva made a big splash in the base oil market this summer when it announced plans for an enormous 13,700-barrel-per-day expansion at its Port Arthur, Texas, base oil plant. The company is being much more low-key, however, about a smaller but significant production increase that has already occurred.

More Markups for Chemicals
Chemical companies are continuing to raise prices on lubricant additives. Crompton Corp., Ciba Specialty Chemicals and Dow Chemical Co. all announced markups within the past two weeks.

Fuchs Profits On the Rise
Fuchs Petrolub AG said yesterday that its second-quarter profit increased 37 percent year-to-year, largely due to improved performance in Europe and more efficient operations.

Valvoline Upgrades Cinci Plant
Valvoline said recently that it has completed a $17 million renovation of its biggest lubricant blending and packaging plant, in Cincinnati. The project included installation of a new bottling line, an automated and metered blender, dedicated piping and 42 tanks for raw materials and finished products. The plant opened in 1996 and employs 101 people. Valvoline, which is owned by Ashland Inc., of Covington, Ky., operates four additional U.S. plants.

Base Oil Price Report
Another week brought more price hikes in the U.S. base oil market. Group III supplier SK Corp. weighed in with markups of 5 cents per gallon, across the board. Naphthenic supplier Cross Oil announced its second increase in less than three weeks, this time a whopping 10 to 12 cents.
