Survey Gauges Plant Manager Pay Rates
Plant managers who work for U.S. lubricant manufacturing companies are paid an average $94,775 a year, and their counterparts at lube distributors $70,359, according to the latest Lubricants Industry Salary Survey conducted by Lubes'n'Greases magazine. The survey suggests that distributor plant managers are gaining on their manufacturing counterparts, who traditionally have been far better paid.

Process Oils Brighten Outlook for Lubes
Lubricant demand in the United States is forecast to grow less than 1 percent per year for the next five years, according to a study from the Freedonia Group. That’s not much but would still be an improvement on the market’s performance the past five years. Process oils are expected to lead the modest growth.

CMS: a $19 Billion Market?
A recent survey found that the market for chemical management services grew 50 percent the past four years to $1.22 billion. The organization conducting the survey said the market could grow to more than $19 billion, but it suggested that providers need to adapt to serve customers that are smaller and that are outside the United States.

Rocco Retires; Chase Promoted
Two well-known lubricant industry executives are moving on -- one to retirement, another to a new position. James V. Rocco, Valvoline's senior vice president for operations, has announced his retirement, effective March 31. The head of ChevronTexaco's worldwide base oils business, Brian Chase, was promoted to vice president for Asia-Pacific of ChevronTexaco Global Lubricants, effective Oct. 1.
 
Base Oil Price Report
After a short respite, record crude oil prices are back, and that is bad news for base oil buyers. Crude prices rose above $50 per barrel for the first time yesterday, due to widening concerns about supply reliability, and analysts said prices may keep climbing. One naphthenic base oil supplier on Monday announced markups, and market observers said other sellers will probably do likewise.
